A further view of the workings in 1977

At the time these two pictures were taken, the mine's custodian lived on the sett. Well known locally, I believe, the lady, Mrs Peggy Oxenford, the last in the line of of a once wealthy local family, and was noted for her eccentricities. The interior - and exterior - of her house was, I recall, in a poor state with pieces of newspaper covering cracks in the plaster work. I have been told that she often was heard talking to the mine as if it was an animated object. She also became most upset if, when showing visitors round the workings, the latter managed to keep their feet dry!! The smaller figure on the right was indeed the lady in question!
