Allendale appeared to have 2 lead smelters each with a long flue leading to a vertical chimney on high ground as it was found that more lead could be scraped from the roof of the flue than was produced in the smelter. Young boys of around 10 years old were employed to do the scraping. Life expectancy was 3 to 4 years before they died of lead poisoning. The 2 flues crossed over each other on the way up the hillside. Here we are looking along the top of one flue with the chimney of the other flue on the hilltop. The chimney for this flue has collapsed
