Allendale appeared to have 2 lead smelters each with a long chimney leading to a vertical chimney on high ground as it was found that more lead could be scraped from the roof of the chimney that was produced in the smelter. Young boys of around 10 years old were employed to do the scraping. Life expectancy was 3 to 4 years before they died of lead poisoning. The 2 flues crossed over each other on the way up the hillside. Here we are looking along the inside of the newer flue
