Walton Fan Airlock

To the right you can just glimpse the end of the Scirocco tangential ventilation fan. The grilled walkway gives access over the fan drift to (one of ) the fan's bearings and the 'clutch' which is under that grilled cowl. This fan had the option to run from a Bellis & Morcom triple expansion steam engine at this end through a wall to the left (Dickie Bird's photo in this same gallery shows the actual engine) or, from an electric motor at the other bearing's end. The electric motor was located in No.3 winder house.
