View over the flooded pit at the Girofla Mine 1983
Located near Mungana this was the largest single mine in the Chillagoe district yeilding 220,000 tonnes of ore for 29,000 tonnes of lead, 5,900 tonnes of copper and 1.75Mozs of silver. The mine was discovered in 1888 and worked until 1914. Between 1920 and 1926 the State government worked the mine down to a total depth of 250m.
