View of The South Shaft from Cross street in Hought town Centre late 1970s
The South Shaft winder was quite a grand looking building full of ornate and characterful brickwork. It was also unusual due to the left hand part of the gable end is supported by an Iron Girder so that the trains could run underneath, This was the 2nd Winder for the South shaft as it outgrew the old vertical one, it the same time it received the new Headstock as both the original items used to face toward the right.
