The Killers Branch, about 1963

The Killers branch, so named after the Killers brothers who owned mineral works close by, was the principle access to Middleton limetone Mine. It was, as still is, very steep for an adhesion railway, and often caused much trouble for the train crew when the rails were wet and greasy. It is known that on at least one occasion, the crew actually baled out of the loco when it was overpowered by the limestone waggons. Today, the killers Branch is home to the narrow gauge Steeplehouse Railway.
