The Arches

The HIK incline was also known as the "Arches Incline" and this is why. This is the view from the previous location, looking down to G floor itself (under the rubbish). The roof of the chamber which originally carried the H, I and K inclines became bad in the 1890's and to preserve the inclines, they were surrounded by masonry arches from their feet as far as G floor where the quarry face was. A massive retaining wall was built over them and the chamber back filled behind it with waste. The year the operation was completed was commemorated by the incised slab seen here above the incline entrances. (Yes, only two, one incline served H, the other I and K.)
