The "Aad" Pit Bedlington A

The pit was known locally as the "Aad"pit. Before the mine was sunk in 1838 the village was called Sleekburn, afterwards the mine was known as Sleekburn "A". As the village grew and a railway station was built it was classed as part of Bedlington and called Bedlington Station hence Bedlington "A" Pit.

The Pit was owned by the Bedlington Coal Company and was the main pit in the group which included Bedlington "D"(Doctor Pit), "E" (West Sleekburn), "F" (Bomarsund), Barrington Colliery and latterly after nationalisation Barmoor Colliery, Netherton, Choppington A and B Collieries and Cambois colliery.

The photo shows the rear of the A and B Pit winders, headgear, Boiler house and Ventillating Fan house taken in front of Shop Row.
The photo was taken on the Sunday morning in September 1971 after salvage. The next morning Monday the ropes were cut.
