Description: Seacombe Quarry, Worth Matravers. Looking NE. Underground workings for Portland Stone. In the Isle of Purbeck much stone is obtained by underground working: above the building stone tier is a thin bed, the 'underpicking', overlain by a massive limestone, the 'House cap', which forms a good roof. The underpicking is removed first, then the building stone is excavated.
