Penrhyn Quarry Sebastopol Balance ca 1973
There were originally two balances just here, Sebastopol and Fitzroy. the latter was off to the left and a slighly different type in that the water tank was under the wagon carrier. Sebastopol and Fitzroy were named for the floors within the quarry which they served - the same floors were also named George and Douglas in the adjacent part of the quarry. Sebastopol balance still exists, but at some point years after this photo was taken the flat wire rope holding the cage up was broken and the cage plunged to the bottom of the shaft!
