Orchard Wood dig, 1988

In 1988, permission was granted by British Gypsum to investigate 18th/19th century limestone mine workings in Archer Wood, near Battle. What was thought to be the main pumping shaft was located and dug down to water. Pumping proved futile and the dig was filled in.
