Description: Minepit Copse, 5/8 m. S. by E. of Wormley Hill. Looking S. Old working for clay-ironstone. This surface depression, partially filled with stagnant water, indicates the site of a shaft or 'bell-pit' dug to obtain clay-ironstone, used as an iron-ore in the time of the Wealden iron industry. The shaft would have been re-filled with excavated clay, the settling and compaction of which has produced the depression.
