Newstead Colliery,Notts
The photo actually dates from december 1987, The conveyor in the back ground is from Linby Colliery which Tipped at Newstead from 1968 to Linbys closure in march 1988, the conveyor ran along the disused great northern railway for about two miles and tipped about twenty million tonnes of spoil from Linby. Newsteads coal prep plant was shut down during 1984 and all coal was transported by road to Bentinck Colliery for washing, work had started on linking Newstead to Bentinck by means of a 1300 metre long 16X12 foot drift driven from Newstead pit bottom to the Waterloo seam at Bentinck 200m below, when drift and installation work was complete in 1985 conveyors two kilometres long carried Newstead coal via the underground link and coal movements by road ceased. IN 1986 the Tupton seam was abandoned due to geological problems, production came from two faces in the High Hazels when closure came during march 1987, geological problems again cited.
