Newstead Colliery,Notts

A £1.8 million surface and underground reconstruction scheme was approved in 1956, This included reorganisation of underground transport in the high main seam and concentrating of coal winding at no2 downcast shaft by the introduction of 3.5 ton capacity mine cars. A new pit bottom mine car circuit and heapstead at no2 shaft and a new inset and airlock at no1 shaft were also built together with new manriding and materials handling facilities.
Twin main ventilating fans were installed and bought into operation towards the end of 1959 replacing the original steam driven fans which dated back from 1877 and new electric winders were commissioned in 1960. Construction work started on a new coal prep plant and railway sidings reorganisation started in may 1964.
In 1971 work started on the drivage of two drifts from the high main workings to previously unworked Tupton seam 500 metres below. In 1975 the shafts were filled in to just below the high main insets(220metres). Productin started from tupton faces the following year.
