Mine site from the River Sil
Once the auriferous alluvial deposit had been brought down, it was flushed into 'washing channels' (wooden agogae, Pliny the Elder). Before the gold-bearing mud entered the washing channels the thickest clumps of waste was taken out and piled up to one side, forming the huge heaps of boulders (known locally as murias) which are still visible today. The building in the distance is the Hotel Medulio.
