Mill Dam No 2 shaft. January 1977
An ill advised (as it turned out) attempt to explore this large and fairly deep shaft. It was very exposed and had a fair amount of nasty iron dangly bits waving about in thin air. It was found to be totally blocked, some hundred feet or so down, with only a very small working off to one side which quickly closed down. On return I became completely exhausted ("bonk" as cyclists call it) and after a short spell of R & R in a side level some 30 feet from the top it was only the good hauling properties of my companion that I saw the light of day again. Perhaps not helped by the strong pipe tobacco I smoked in my late 20s! - much to the irritation of all my mining friends who had to put up with this whilst having a rest and their croust underground. Happy days!
