Marley Hill Colliery late 1960s/ early 70s?
General layout of the mine taken near the Engine shed looking North. Showing a huge crater, Difficult to take this picture today due to all the trees, but bits of the retaining wall still remains, including some of the strengthening buttresses, infact much of the mine layout can still be traced though no buildings remain, apart from a disused Fan House Building in a field nearby. The Headstock on the left is a Koepe Type, (Pulley Wheels (Sheaves) one above the other) but with a normal ground mounted Winder, quite rare in the North East, (There are two shaft caps for this mine) However nearby Byermoor had an almost identical Headstock. From memory a similar type was at Lumley Six Pit, Chopwell No3, Heworth (Ada Pit), Horden (after reconstruction), and West Stanley (Burns Pit) possibly a few more !. There are two Shaft Caps for this one, Whilst the Down cast Shaft on the right is again an exact copy of the one at nearby Kibblesworth . Byermoor, Marleyhill and Kibblesworth were all owned at one time by John Bowes which explains the similarities.
