Lumburn portal of Tavistock Canal Tunnel
Taken 1965 on official visit during repair work to tunnel bore by CEGB. On the R of the portal is the walled-off shaft of Wheal Crowndale. Water in canal about 2' deep to enable vehicle access to tunnel bore. It's worth underlining that this was an authorised visit during periodic 'outage' of the canal for maintenance in the tunnel. The following year, 1966, the Lumburn Aqueduct, another major civil engineering feature that carries the canal over the Lumburn valley, was virtually reconstructed following leakage.

Apologies however unless mistaken, I understand the walled-off shaft to be part of Wheal Crebor which was largely worked from here.
