Ladder rail and the dreaded Tan-y-Grage corner
Descending loaded wagons were controlled by a brakeman, and several novices left the tracks at Tan-y-Grage especially when track was leaf covered in autumn or snow covered. Several riders had to jump off, but there was only one fatality during the operation of the mine. Iron plates were laid on 4x6" timbers (6" includes buried portion) generally in 10ft lengths. The frequency of accidents is indicated by the fact that after the second accident, within one week, the driver was suspended for a week!
