Kirkby Colliery
Two shafts were sunk in 1890 to the Top Hard seam, the Lowmoor shaft to the right was sunk in 1915 to the Deep Soft and later a surface drift was driven to the High Main seam.
Shortly after this Photo was taken a £4 million re-organisation scheme took place including a new Coal prep plant and another Drift to surface Coal from nearby Langton and Brookhill Collieries, output would then be over 2 million tons per year, in 1966 Kirkby's 1600 men produced over 1 million tons from the Deep Soft and High Main seams, Langton Merged with Kirkby in November 1967. Kirkby was suffering heavy losses and was closed in july 1968, before the re-organisation could be completed. Brookhill was then merged with Bentinck in Aug 1968. The recently developed Tupton reserves were worked from Bentinck and Newstead took the High Main Coal.
