Hucknall No2 Colliery, 3@4 Shafts

Two Shafts were sunk in 1865/7 to the Top Hard Horizon, no4 shaft being deepened to the Deep Hard Seam in 1889. All the Top Hard was worked out by 1920 and an area of Deep Soft to the west of the shafts was worked via drifts from the the Top Hard Pit bottom between 1913 and 1930.
Production from the upper seams finished in 1967, by which time all the workable High main, and Main Bright had been taken along with limited areas of Low Bright, High Hazels and Waterloo.
In 1957 a major reconstruction of the Colliery was begun and continued for the next 12 years. The reconstruction made possible the development of the lower seams and production from the Deep Soft seam to the east of the shafts began in 1964. Two drifts were driven to the Blackshale seam in 1967/8 and the first Blackshale Face began producing Coal in 1970.
The Deep Soft seam ceased Production in 1971 and until closure all Coal came from the Blackshale Seam.
