Horse whim chamber and support winding wire rope.

The deep adit is driven straight as an arrow to the lode passing the pumping engine winze. The chamber shown in the picture is a worked out section of the lode which housed a horse whim.
The heavy timber carried a pulley over which passed the chain or wire rope used for hoisting kibbles of ore at the underground shaft.
