Haw Park Shaft

Haw Park was in the early years of the 20th Century a pit in its own right, being adjacent to the Barnsley canal. Before the re-development of the main walton/Sharlston West site in the 1920s this became the upcast end employing a Waddle fan. It's importance declined as the years progressed and in the end was retained for emergency access and additonal ventilation. Ironically it out-survived the main site by a year or two before being demolished. Note the pulley sheave and the 'notch' smashed out of the brickwork to allow the rope from a low level emergency/portable winder.
