Description: Furnace Wood, approx 1/2 m. W. of Horam. Bell pits for ironstone. Overgrown and degraded bell pits, dug for clay ironstone in the basal Wadhurst Clay. Old ironstone workings such as these are a common relic of the once important Wealden iron industry, recalled today by such place names as 'Furnace Wood'.
