Foss Barite Mine

Foss Barite Mine, Aberfeldy, Perthshire. Open pit stripping of barite at left-hand side. The crusher and conveyor belt are in the centre of the photograph. The deposit was found during exploration work by the British Geological Survey in the 1970's following a survey of the stream sediment chemistry. The Survey were looking for the souce of copper mineralization but found anomalously high levels of barium zinc and lead.
