Entrance to Clayton Copper mine

Situated in the Manifold Valley in North Staffordshire (098.585) under Ecton Hill.
The Copper mines in the hill were probably the richest in the Peak district in the 18th Century. The large workings are mainly below river level and are now flooded. As an example the internal shaft in Clayton mine was 160 fathoms deep.
