DE Floor Turbine Pipe bends
Two floors above G was the main DE floor level tunnel from the quarry to PenyBont. Variously referrred to as Lefal Galed, Lefel Coed and the Horse Tunnel, this dated back to the 1840's-50's. The turbine pipe to the G pump passed down one ancient shaft from the surface to the DE level, then bent through two right angles about 15-20 feet apart down the shaft to G floor. The latter shaft is in the foreground -note the massive timber baulk to stop the pipe moving under shock loads, in the background the pipe bends and rises again up the upper shaft.
