Clynelish Quarry. 1899
Clynelish Quarry, 1.3 km. west-north-west of Brora. Sutherland. The photograph shows a general view of the quarry with boulder clay, a glacial deposit, resting on sands and fine-grained siliceous white sandstone (Clynestone). The darker boulder clay can easily be seen resting on c. 3 m. of silicified sandstone. The sandstone is fairly soft and easily crushed and on exposure becomes quite hard and tough. A crane is shown in the centre of the photograph while blocks of sandstone await lifting on the quarry floor. The sandstones are of the Clynekirkton Sandstone Formation of Corallian (Upper Jurassic) age.
