Bonvilles Court Colliery Fan Pit c1910

This is the only known photo of the first shaft of the Bonvilles Court Colliery, known as the Landing Pit it was sunk in 1840. The Tower shaft was sunk in 1845 about 500 yards to the South which is now the caravan site, that shaft took over from the Landing Pit as the main shaft when the 15 foot Waddle Fan, the first of it's kind to be installed in the UK in 1863 was fitted. The Landing Pit became the ventilation shaft and also the escape shaft in case of emergancy. It was then known locally as the Fan Pit and the Fan Road is still the name of the road leading from the top of the Ridgeway out of the village towards Saundersfoot Station.
