Beamish Mary shafts
Sadly I'm not sure of the exact shaft names but I think the Upcast (brick one) was The Air Shaft and the Lattice frame the Mary Pit ? The Upcast was an unusual and distinctive design, (Usworth Colliery in Washington had a similar item, but much taller) This picture shows extra height after reconstruction, Both Headstocks faced the opposite way, (old pictures show a wooden type structure holding the Wheels in place similar to Beamish 2nd Pit) gaining new electric winders by The NCB. Pictures exist of the site still standing (but with the metal lattice frame removed) and used as a small Industrial estate, However nothing remains now. copyright of Beamish Archives.
