Akets Coal Mines

Somewhere in the region of 70 pits once covered this part of Grimwith Moor, mining a 18" seam of coal, some 30 of the pits were destroyed when Grimwith Reservoir was extended in the 1970s.
Further up the moor another thinner seam of coal was also worked from more pits.
