Strangely named Stargate Colliery was the oldest of the Stella Coal Company Mines Sinking started in 1802. The Coal owners used a characteristic light coloured Brick with Red bands, there are many such buildings in The Ryton Area reminding everyone of its link to Mining.

The Mine closed in 1963 but a handful of buildings remain in a small Industrial Estate and by the late 1960s Mining had been swept away, However Open Cast Mining keeps threatening to return as rumour has it vast reserves remain.
