Showing the amount of mines in the area, To the North West of the Nicholson Mine near the mass of railways was the Plain Pit, this mine and the area to the East and North of the Nicholson Pit was Heavily Open Casted but known as Rainton Meadows (now a Wild life Area along with Joes Pond) whilst the main Leamside Line running past the Plain Pit was recently ripped up (2013) after being abandoned for over 20 years.
