The Walbottle Group of Mines (The Durham Mining Museum lists 7 main, but also lots of other named shafts and air shafts). The Mines were scattered around the Walbottle/Newburn area "North of The Tyne" but to The West of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Being close to Newcastle it was part of the massive Industrial Revolution, The heavy number of mines in this and surrounding areas powered a number of Massive Iron, Brickworks and Glass Works, along with an abundance of Railway lines.
All The Mines appear on old maps as "Walbottle Colliery" which sometimes indicates mines open and close as markets dictate. They are listed below with their approx. grid ref number, However there was also East Walbottle Colliery (https://www.aditnow.co.uk/Mines/East-Walbottle-Coal-Colliery_8972/ ) which was actually part of The Prestwick Group of mines and was situated North of Newcastle Airport.

North Walbottle/High Pit. https://www.aditnow.co.uk/Album/Historic-Photographs-Of-North-Walbottle_20117/ Most Northerly Mine to The West of Westerhope, its wagonway crossed the modernday A69 and was a continuation of the Coronation Mine. It was the last to close. Two capped shafts turned into flower beds remain in a Housing estate NZ181680

Duke Pit possibly the oldest of the Mines opening 1740 but completely removed from 1897 map? later listed as old shaft A flower bed made from old coal trucks to the North of the site in "The Paddock" housing estate is a reminder of its Industrial past. The site itself is fenced off with a number of ruins and founds in the undergrowth. NZ168661
New Winning South of Duke Pit, Unknown if part of The Walbottle Group or Throckley Group? or if New winning is its name? 1859 map shows wagonway linking upto Duke Pit, with possible shafts? 1920 map lists as old coal shafts. Situated on the Throckley Maria pit Wagonway,Today two shafts remain within an allotment area, whilst substantial walled remains in a deep cutting below the shaft area. Also large substation nearby in a derelict condition possibly connected to the mine NZ167659.
Percy Pit https://www.aditnow.co.uk/Mines/Walbottle-Coal-Mine_8665/ just North of The Leamington road A6085, more or less opposite entrance to the present day Newburn Industrial estate. Old maps show Masses of railway sidings that overpowers this mine, 1951 map shows possibly closed as near the shaft marked ruins. Aerial views show landscaped area with heavy tree planting NZ175649
