Toquepala Copper Mine (Peru)


The mine is 6.5 kms across and 300 meters deep. There are copper tailings to the north of the pit and leaching fields are to the south. The copper from this mine is shipped in 100 ton gondolas to the smelter and refinery in Ilo which is 95 km from here. The railroad is owned by Southern Peru Copper and hauls about 5 million tons per year.
