Thorncliffe Water Drift (Elsecar (Sellars) Sough) Coal Tunnel (United Kingdom)


A major active gravity mine water drainage adit which goes under various names including Thorncliffe Water Drift; Elsecar Water Drift and Sellars Sough. Some records show the current outlet to be named has the second outlet which possibly suggest a higher original outlet. Dates for driving the sough are uncertain, but are likely to be about or pre 1750 although there are some references to dates of about 1730
