The rock in the main quarry face is thinly bedded gritstone known as 'seam and level' which made the hard, durable flags that Tegg's quarry was noted for. It is estimated that 70% of the streets of Macclesfield were once paved in stone from Tegg's Quarry.
Quarrying started at Tegg’s Nose as early as the 1500’s. For nearly 500 years men hammered, hacked, chiselled and blasted away at the rock in all weathers for low wages.
The quarry is now part of a country park with stunning views and walks suitable for most, which coupled to some nice IA makes this an excellent visit. There are some nice relics which have been moved to the site .. a Crane, a small Stone Crusher and a fantastic Stone Saw. The quarry area has some open pits and faces which whilst part of the park should still be explored carefully.
