Strathfield Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

This mine was located at Stretton just off the B6014 road to Matlock. It was owned and operated by H & C Harshorne and replaced their No2 Riley Lane Mine. The mine had 2 adits of which No 1 opened in 1960, full production being achieved a year later. No 2 adit was some 300 yards away connected by an overland tramway. The No 2 adit was abandoned in 1980 after the No 3 adit was driven from August 1978 being opened in Winter 1978. the seam worked was the 4' 6" thick Tupton Low Main seam. A 50 HP haulage engine was used to work the drift.
By April 1980 the coal face was 350 yards in and 550 yards in by May 1985. The last coal was produced from No 3 adit in 1987. The whole site was cleared in 1988. A private house was built on the original mine site with No 2 & 3 adits being landscaped into the local fields. H & C Hartshorne went on to develop Amber Colliery further Sth along the valley.
