Sovereign Hill (North Normanby) Gold Mine (Australia)

Sovereign Hill at Ballarat in Victoria is Australia's foremost mining heritage site, originally opened in the 1970s and now very well established. From a mining history point of view the key attractions are wood fired Cornish boilers and a host of steam driven equipment including two winders, a Cornish beam pump, a 5 head stamper and a berdan pan and shaking table although the whole heritage site has a strong historical mining relevance. The heritage area is largely situated on the site of the old North Normanby mine and the current 'workings' intersected old workings from that mine in the course of developing an underground 'experience'. Two underground experiences are available; a 'deep lead' and a hard-rock mine. Entry fee is A$52.50 for two days access and the underground tours are extra. Entry fee includes access to the Gold Museum, a separate facility outside the heritage area.
