South Tanfield (Oxhill Colliery) Coal Mine (United Kingdom)


The original name of this colliery was Oxhill. It was leased in about 1837 by James Joicey and Joseph Smith, Smith left the partnership after 9 months and by 1850 James was in partnership with his brother John and the Colliery was operated under the Company name 'The owners of South Tanfield Colliery'.
By 1853 they had taken on other collieries and another partner, their brother Edward and the Company name changed to 'James Joicey and Co'.
Closed November 1914.
