Snydale Hall Colliery Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

The obvious spoil heap of this mine is easily seen to the West as you pass by south bound on the M61 near Junction 5. The mine first appears in the mines lists in 1858. The mine was owned by various small companies and was liquidated in 1882. The mine was sold to the Westhoughton Coal and Cannel Co in 1896 only to close in 1903 being disantled by 1907 along with the connecting incline to the L & Y railway.
Surprisingly the two shafts survived to living memory and the mines spoil tip and office/wages building survives as a dwelling occupied by a former miner from the area. The site of the shafts appear as a cap with a marker on one and a depression for the other, the cap having subsided into the shaft and reburied by the NCB some years ago.
