San Giovanni Lead Mine (Italy)

In San Giovanni a cave inside the mine

Dug in the heart of the homonym mount that hugs the road from Iglesias to Carbonia, the mine of Saint Giovanni (Gonnesa-Iglesias) is among the most famous also because, inside of it, in the second half of the nineteenth century was uncovered the charming cave of Santa Barbara. A good part of the 600 miners employed in the Thirties for the extraction of lead and zinc, lived in the near fraction of Bindua. Of great value from the industrial-archaeological point of view is the “laverìa” Idina and the structures of the furnaces and of the silos, but arouse interest also the cinematic hall and the workers club, since they make understand as developed the life of the village around the mine. Not far there is the site of Campo Pisano.
