Ruffner Ore Mines were operated by the Sloss Furnace Company, later the Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Iron Company. These mines provided ore for the nearby Sloss Furnaces, designated as a National Historic Landmark. Operated intermittently from the 1880s to the 1950s, the Ruffner mines exhibit a wide variety of technology, tracing the evolution of mining practice in the Birmingham District.
