Situated in the Cabo de Gata National Park in Almeria, gold was discovered here in the late 19th century. Mining was on a small scale until 1925 when the Rodalquilar Gold Mine Co started up. This failed to make a profit, processing the ore by the mercury method, and closed down. It was followed in 1931 by Rodalquilar Mines Ltd who were more successful using the cyanide method. They produced 2 tons of gold prior to enforced cessation of work at the start of the civil war. Mining was subsequently nationalised and Rodalquilar re-opened in 1942. A new smelter was installed, much of which remains, but eventually reserves came to an end and the mine was closed again in 1967. Finally, a subsidiary of Cluff Resources and Antofagasta Holdings unsuccessfully reworked the mine in the 1980s.
