Preston Island Collieries (George & Anne Pits) Coal Mine (United Kingdom)

This 18th Century Salt Pan and colliery complex lies on what was originally an Island off the coast near Culross. The site was self contained with its own barracks and coal mines for fuelling the salt pans. The mine closed after an accident with thebarracks being re-used as an illegal still. For a full report on the site see
The site is a fascinating glimpse into Scotlands past and whilst a good walk from Culross it is well worth it, the bird life of the Forth also adding interest. http://www.tafac.org.uk/TAFAJ_2_1.pdf
