This tramway is part of the Butterley Company network, please see and use the Butterley Co entry for photoshttp://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Butterley-Company-Railway/ />The tramway ran from Portland Collieries (sunk c.1820's) to the Portland Wharf (on the Cromford Canal) at Jacksdale, or across the canal and in to Codnor Park Ironworks. The Portland Collieries were built along the Mansfield - Pinxton Railway (built 1819), however it was considered more economic to put in a separate line to the canal at Jacksdale.Along the original section of the route, 2 steam haulage engine were installed; one at the top of the incline from Portland to Selston, and the 2nd (Brake House) on the incline down to Jacksdale - the Brake House can still be seen tucked away in the middle of some more modern houses.Later Branches were added to the rest of the Portland Pits, with an additional incline and engine; and another branch was later added serving Mexboro Collieries (Top and Bottom Pits)The NGR is for Ashes Farm which is at the junction of the Portland Line and the Mexboro BranchLink to Map on Bing: http://binged.it/1aBxKIJ />Link to Portland Path Project:http://www.jacksdale.org.uk/the-project
