Newbiggin Gypsum Mine (United Kingdom)

A gypsum mine which worked the B & C beds. It started as a quarry in the 1960s and a few tears later went underground.
The mine produced both gypsum and anhydrite, the percentage of anhydrite in the beds worked increased with depth and when the Eastgate cementworks, in Weardale closed, shutting off one of its main markets for the anhydrite this damaged its viability.

The mine closed in 2006, the site is partially restored and is due to be completely landscaped by about December 2007.
