Mt Leyshon (Gold Horn Amongst Others) Gold Mine (Australia)

A number of small underground and open pit operations were worked on a distinctive hill known as the Pyramid and later renamed as Mt Leyshon in the period between the early 1870s and 1920s. The ore was always very low grade compared to the quartz reef mines in nearby Charters Towers but was readily recovered by stamping and mercury amalgamation. Operations recommenced in 1986 by Pan Australian Mining who developed a substantial open pit gold operation on the site, for several years the largest gold mine in Queensland. The mine is now exhausted.
