Mount Fitton (South) Copper Mine (Australia)

The mine was discovered in 1889 by Harrison and is situated 1.5 miles S of the now abandoned Mt Fitton homestead. The deposit comprises veins and shears of copper mineralisation in quartz veins in foliated granite. At shallow depth there were some rich patches of chalcocite and carbonates, passing into pyrite and chalcopyrite at depth. The mine was worked by a combination of shafts and an adit. Total recorded copper production was 1,429 tons of ore yielding 113 tons of coper metal. The mine was used a site for seismic testing during the 1950s or 1960s at which time the side of the hill blew out leaving a massive crater-like scar.
